Melissa Boodoo

Artist member since 2023
Toronto, Ontario

Melissa Boodoo is a Chinese-Trinidadian fine artist and interior designer based in Toronto, Canada. As a daughter of migrants and a first-generation Canadian, her cultural roots and life experiences strongly influence her paintings. Originating as an homage to her Chinese and Hindu heritage, she explores the meeting of her upbringing through her exploration of their spiritual symbols within the two unique cultures. Her work evolves as she delves deeper into her subconscious.

Through her impressionist work of koi fish ponds to her expressive abstract paintings, Melissa explores her raw emotions through brushworks and colours that reflect her life experiences and self discovery.

Her creative process serves as a bridge between the external world and her inner dialogue, informed by over fifteen years of artistic practice and an eight-year background in Interior Design. Melissa’s practice is informed by a discerning eye for colour, composition, and aesthetics. These foundational elements act as a base to her paintings and act as a visual reflection of her exploration of self-identity, culture, life experiences and her never-ending curiosity of the world that we live in.

Featured in two solo and eight group exhibitions, including a year-long feature at the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, Melissa has earned recognition for her unique artistic vision and cultural expression. With each new work, she continues to push the boundaries of her practice, exploring new techniques and expressions while connecting with her cultural roots and personal experiences.
